Tina and Barry Baruwa, Morris Pasties Ealing Take one family business, add two spoonfuls of quality and value, bring to the boil with a modern dining atmosphere and a Michelin Star rated development chef, sprinkle liberally with franchising expertise, and you have a traditional business catered to the growing fast food market. Morris Pasties is a family-run business with a Cornish heritage spanning more than 30 years. Having proven and formulated the franchise programme in Newquay under the expert guidance of Franchise Development Services (Southern) Consultant Gordon Patterson, the company is expanding nationwide. The most recent store to open is in the brand new Chapelfield shopping centre in Norwich, where John Roseby has completed his first month's trading. Other shops are scheduled to open soon in Liverpool, Southampton, Bury St Edmunds and Milton Keynes. Existing franchises opened earlier this year in Falmouth, High Wycombe and Ealing are performing well with the franchisees fully endorsing the viability of the franchise system. Tina and Barry Baruwa opened their Ealing shop in early October and are bubbling over with enthusiasm for the brand and the future growth of the business. Tina and Barry opted for a Morris Pasties franchise over other opportunities with more established brands because the franchise offered a refreshing family-style business for a smaller investment. Tina adds: "I had two or three businesses in mind, but when I visited Morris Pasties I was impressed by how knowledgeable Chris and Alison Morris (the Founders) are - they have a very clear plan for the future." Like other Morris Pasties franchisees, Tina and Barry have become part of a family legacy that began in a small butcher's shop selling premium local meat. It was in this shop that Morris Pasties was born and from which the first pasties, baked to a secret recipe, were sold. Today, Morris Pasties maintains its core values of quality and value. "Our pasties are still made in the traditional way," reveals Managing Director Chris Morris. "We source the finest Cornish meats and vegetables from local farmers so all ingredients have full traceability and all pasties are hand-layered and hand-crimped." Franchisees are not expected to bake the speciality pasties themselves, as experience has shown that pasties cook best from frozen. The baking procedure has been simplified to achieve easy, consistent results." Premium soups, speciality ice creams and sandwiches created by Michelin starred consultant chef Nathan Outlaw complement traditional pasties, with Fairtrade organic coffee, various freshly baked morning goods and pastries completing a range of products designed to give maximum profitability to franchisees. Tina believes that these additional products have been beneficial to the business drawing customers in at different times of the day. "One of the great things about Morris Pasties is that they give you the opportunity to find out from customers what they want and add appropriate products," Tina furthers. "We love the business and our customers love it too, they say it's the best shop in town." Morris Pasties' philosophy is to support franchisees every step of the way and the franchise package reflects this. Franchisees receive support in gaining premises approval and a combination of in-store and classroom training covering product knowledge, baking techniques, administration procedures, marketing strategies and corporate standards in addition to business management. To help launch the new business a member of the Morris Pasties team will visit franchisees to assist with marketing the business and supporting them on a one-to-one level. Ongoing support is provided in the form of training, development seminars, telephone assistance, email support and an intranet service. "The training was fantastic," Tina endorses. "We were taught everything we needed to know to open the shop and within half an hour people were coming in to have a look. The support has been wonderful. We can call them at anytime if we have a problem. We're really glad that we took on the franchise and plan to open at least two more shops." Morris Pasties is looking for motivated team players like Tina, who are willing to work hard and committed to providing high quality products and customer service to share in its success. People who fulfil these criteria will become part of a legacy steeped in Morris family tradition and history, with exceptionally strong values.
